Building a Chicken Coop- Which Style Is Right for
You?
There are a few different styles of chicken coops that can be
built. When building a chicken coop for your personal use, you’ll need to consider each of the styles to
choose the one that’s right for you. If you’re thinking about building a chicken coop, take a look at the
three different chicken coop styles below so you can decide which is right for you.
Small, Portable Chicken Coops
Portable chicken coops are usually small coops that only house a
few chickens. These coops can be moved pretty easily around your yard to give your chickens new ground once
the previous area has been worn down. The downside of building a chicken coop this small is that you probably
won’t have the option to expand if you decide you’d like more chickens. So, you’d have to build a new larger
coop later on. If you have the budget, it may be best to build a bigger coop the first time.
Medium Sized Chicken Coops
Medium sized chicken coops are great if you’re building a chicken
coop for the first time. They can house more chickens than the small coops but are easier and more affordable
to build than the larger coops. Also, medium sized chicken coops can usually be expanded pretty easily if you
decide you want more chickens in the future. So, building a chicken coop that’s medium sized is probably the
best option for most people.
Large, Permanent Chicken Coops
As the name implies, permanent chicken coops can’t be moved
around your yard. Typically, these coops are quite a bit larger than portable chicken coops. If you’re
building a chicken coop for several chickens, then a large, permanent coop may be the best choice for you. Of
course, it’s important to carefully decide where you want to place a permanent coop since you won’t be able to move
it around once it’s built. However, the benefit is that your chickens will have plenty of space to run and
nest.
As you can see, when building a chicken coop, you much first
decide which style will work best for you. While this depends on many factors, the simplest but most
important factor is how many chickens you want to house. Depending on the number, you may have no choice but
to build a large chicken coop.
